EFA vs. AFLE: Which new league has made the stronger start?
Two new European football leagues launched in 2026. After the first weeks, the EFA looks more structured, while the AFLE brings bigger brands and major growth potential.
Two new leagues, one shared goal
The 2026 season marks a major turning point for European American football. With the European Football Alliance (EFA) and the American Football League Europe (AFLE), two new competitions have launched with the ambition of building a more stable, more visible and more sustainable professional football landscape in Europe.
Both leagues are young and both still have to prove themselves. But after the first few weeks, an early picture is emerging: the EFA currently feels more structured and coherent as an overall product. The AFLE, however, brings broader geography, bigger brands and major long-term upside.
On the field: strong leaders, but early gaps
Sporting-wise, the race is close. In the EFA, the Munich Ravens, Nordic Storm and Paris Musketeers have made strong early impressions. Munich’s road win in Frankfurt was a statement, Nordic Storm look mature, and Paris have started with defensive stability.
At the same time, Frankfurt Galaxy, Raiders Tirol and Prague Lions still have work to do. In a six-team league, every imbalance becomes more visible.
The AFLE counters with major names such as Rhein Fire, Vienna Vikings, Panthers Wrocław and Berlin Thunder. Vienna have started strongly, Rhein Fire opened with a dominant win against London, and Paris Lights already look like a serious new project.
TV and streaming: EFA currently ahead
The clearest advantage for the EFA is the media product. The league communicates that all inaugural-season games are available live and free on the official YouTube channel, supported by local and international partners including HR/BR, Molotov.tv, Sporty TV, Fubo, Verdens Gang and Sportdigital.
The EFA also highlights premium production with nine-camera setups, replays, analysis and production by Two Circles. For a new league, that is a very strong signal.
The AFLE also has valuable broadcast building blocks, including AFLE+, Sport en France, Polsat Sport and Red Bull TV for Vikings games. But at this stage, the model feels less unified and less easy to explain than the EFA’s central broadcast approach.
Money and structure: no hard numbers, but clear signals
There are no reliable public financial figures for either league. It would therefore be unserious to claim that one league definitely has more money than the other. What can be evaluated are structure, partners, brand strength, ticketing, media strategy and operational stability.
The EFA currently appears leaner and more controlled. Six teams mean less travel complexity and a simpler central product. The risk is that the league must prove it can grow beyond its current size.
The AFLE is built bigger from day one: eight teams from seven countries, a Gold Bowl in Duisburg, Eventim ticketing and heavyweight brands such as Rhein Fire and Vienna Vikings. That gives the league reach, but also more cost, logistics and risk.
Brands and fans: AFLE has the bigger individual draws
When it comes to individual brands, the AFLE has a real advantage. Rhein Fire may be the strongest single brand across both new leagues, while the Vienna Vikings remain one of Europe’s most important football names.
The EFA also has strong teams, especially Munich, Frankfurt, Tirol, Paris, Nordic and Prague. But in pure brand power, the AFLE currently feels slightly bigger.
Conclusion
Right now: slight advantage EFA. The league looks more controlled, more accessible and stronger in its media product.
Long term: wide open. The AFLE has more breadth, bigger brands and higher growth potential, but also carries more risk.
The EFA is currently the cleaner product. The AFLE is the bigger promise. The real winner will not be decided in June 2026, but over the next two or three years through stability, attendance, media reach and trust.
